“Everybody’s waiting for her comeback,” ayon kina Liberty Ignacio and Liberty Salazar, die-hard Noranians.

“Iyong utak niya ideretso niya. Maging professional, so she could be a productive person dahil nag-iisa siyang Superstar,” sabi naman ni Chito Alcid.

Willie Revillame gives money for bishops' new cars

Written by ABS-CBN News. Posted in Entertainment

MANILA, Philippines – Television host Willie Revillame has donated P100,000 to a campaign to help raise funds to buy vehicles for some Catholic bishops, a church-run news service said Wednesday.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines' CBCPNews described Revillame, who recently came under fire over alleged child abuse, of being one of "generous philanthropists" in a fund-raising campaign for the purchase of the vehicles.

Seven bishops who were implicated in the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) fund mess have returned the vehicles they bought from money given under the Arroyo administration.

Lawyer Romulo Macalintal and former Manila Mayor Lito Atienza are leading the fund-raising campaign.

They want to raise P8.2 million, the same amount that the bishops got from the PCSO to buy the vehicles.

Aside from Revillame, others who have also donated to the campaign are were Senator Vicente Sotto (P200,000), Senator Francis Escudero (P100,000), Radyo Veritas (P100,000), Manila Rep. Amado Bagatsing (P100,000), former Senator Ernie Maceda (P10,000), and the eldest son of the late Ramon Mitra (P50,000).

The CBCP said Senator Bong Revilla and his wife, Cavite Representative Lani Mercado, also pledged to give P200,000.

Meanwhile, Macalintal revealed that he got sad by the statements made by Fr. Robert Reyes and Fr. Edu Gariguez over the P50,000 donation given by a son of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, party-list Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo.

"In my 27 years service in the ministry of the liturgy in the Catholic Church, I have been taught by our priests and the Bible not to be judgmental which obviously is expected of a priest,” he said.

Gariguez, executive secretary of the CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action, said the "prelates should refuse the financial aid partially funded by younger Arroyo."

"This is more embarrassing for the Catholic Church that there would be money coming from the Arroyos. This is why in this early stage, we are already saying that we are against it,” he said.

"If you will ask me, it would be better if I would ride a bicycle," Gariguez added.

Reyes, on the other hand, said that "church leaders should not choose convenience over propriety and morality because it would make them weak and vulnerable."

Japan beats US in shootout to win World Cup

Written by Associated Press. Posted in Sports

FRANKFURT, Germany — Japan became the first Asian nation to win the Women’s World Cup on Sunday, beating the United States in a penalty shootout after both sides were level at 2-2 after extra time.

The Japanese denied the U.S. team the chance to become the first country to lift the cup three times. The Americans missed their first three penalties, and Japan went on to win the shootout 3-1 when Saki Kumagai slotted the final shot high past goalkeeper Hope Solo.

Japan was always driven by a greater purpose, hoping its success at the World Cup could provide some emotional relief for a nation still reeling from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

It paid off.

The team displayed a banner reading “To our Friends Around the World — Thank You for Your Support” before the final, and coach Norio Sasaki inspired his players before the quarterfinal win over favorite Germany by showing them pictures of the devastation.

On Sunday, the players were even more pumped us as the match approached its climax.

In a thrilling finale, 32-year-old Japan captain Homare Sawa flicked a corner through a jumble of players and past Solo with three minutes of extra time left to equalize and set up the shootout.

“We ran and ran.We were exhausted but we kept running,” said Sawa, the top scorer in the tournament with five goals.

Japan had already scored late in regulation to force extra time, and the shootout success gave Japan its first victory over the United States in 26 games.

“Not one of the players gave up,” coach Norio Sasaki said. “The penalty kicks are always a 50-50 percent chance.”

Japan goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori did more than her part, saving the first penalty from Shannon Boxx with her foot and swatting the third kick from substitute Tobin Heath away with her gloves. In between, Carli Lloyd skied her shot over the bar.

“In a shootout, I just have to believe in myself and I was very self-confident,” Kaihori said.

For a nation which prides itself on teamwork, Kaihori didn’t need the support of her teammates in the shootout. Instead, she received it from the opposition.

The Americans missed and that was support from the Americans,” Kaihori said.

U.S coach Pia Sundhage was perplexed and couldn’t find an explanation for the penalty misses.

“Sometimes in, sometimes out,” she said.

Sawa received the cup and immediately went into a huddle with her players, a multitude of hands cradling the trophy, as tightly knitted together at the end of the three-week tournament as they were at its start.

“Our defense was very focused and organized. It was very much like the match against Germany,” Sasaki said, referring to the teams’ win over the hosts and two-time defending champions in the biggest upset of the tournament.

After Japan came back in the game late in regulation time, the Americans kept hustling and pressuring and it finally paid off when Alex Morgan sent a pinpoint cross to the towering Wambach in the 104th minute. The forward didn’t even have to lift a foot to send her header past goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori from six yards.

The goal gave Wambach four for the tournament, and it looked good enough for the title. She had scored in the last minute of extra time with a header against Brazil, setting up the shootout win in the quarterfinals, and a goal against France in the semifinals.

Still it left the Americans with bitter disappointment.

“It’s obviously heartbreaking. Japan played well, they never gave up,” Wambach said.

After dominating play from the start, the Americans went ahead in the 69th minute when Megan Rapinoe sent a 35-meter pass to Morgan, and the substitute hustled past Saki Kumagai to slot home with angled shot from 15 meters.

After seeing one shot hit the post and another the crossbar, the U.S. finally managed what it had been working for against a strangely lackluster Japanese team.

Against the run of play, Japan scored a goal out of nothing in the 81st minute when American defenders Rachel Buehler and Alex Krieger failed to clear a ball, allowing star Japan player Aya Miyama to sneak in and slot home from close range past Solo.

That set up for a wild finish with both sides seeking the winner in regulation time. Japan suddenly found its passing game, threatening whenever the Americans lost the ball.

SHANGHAI, China — Yao Ming has made it official, telling a packed news conference in his hometown that a series of injuries have forced him to retire from basketball.

The Houston Rockets center, who has become a household name in China since starting his National Basketball Association (NBA) career as the top draft pick in 2002, says “I will formally end my career.”

The 7-foot-6 (2.29-meter) Yao played eight seasons, but missed 250 regular-season games over the past six years.

Yao’s farewell conference was attended by Houston general manager Daryl Morey. NBA commissioner David Stern was scheduled to send a message via video link. Morey had to get permission from the NBA to be here, as the lockout prohibits contact with players.

“We don’t want to bring them (NBA All-Stars) here and not do anything, we we really want them to play,” said Reyes. “They will give Gilas a good workout.”

Patron seats are pegged at P5500, Lower Box at P3800, Upper A at P1500, Upper B at P800 and General Admission at P350.

Earlier speculations had reigning NBA MVP Derrick Rose and Fiba World Championship MVP Kevin Durant participating in the exhibition games, although they were not included in the announcement.

The PBA also announced the 16-man line up who will play in the exhibition games.
